Updated Lucky Block Mod for Minecraft 1.7.2 / 1.6.4

We reviewed this mod around this time last year, and since then it has seen some drastic improvements.  Let us take a look and see how much it has grown!  If you are not familiar with Lucky Block, it is essentially a mod that adds a new block to the game that has a variety of possible outcomes when it is mined.  The mod is by Player In Distress, and the block looks like this:

The Lucky Block must be crafted by surrounding a dispenser with gold ingots.  You can add or subtract luck to/from the block by combining it with certain items:

Using the block can result in great fortune…

Or certain doom:

New Lucky Block Features

In chronological order since our last review of this mod, the new features include:

Version 4.5

  • Added items Lucky Fishing Rod and Romantic Rose.

  • Lucky tools are gold instead of diamond.

  • Super zombies spawn faster from the block (oh joy).

  • Updated to work with 1.7.2.

Version 5.0

  • Adding and subtracting luck mechanic created (as shown above).

  • Lucky blocks may be found randomly in some structures.

  • Many fish can drop from the block.

  • Livestock, horses, and villagers.

  • A very small chance to spawn a temple that houses eight additional lucky blocks.

  • Some easter eggs.

Current Version

  • Wishing wells!  These structures may grant the player a wish if a coin is thrown in.

  • More villagers – actual useful villagers, though.

  • Lucky potion – random useful effects (such as haste, regeneration, etc.).

  • Unlucky splash potion – cause doom on your foes!

  • Tamed mobs – wolves with colored collars, and cats with colored fur.

  • Flowers!

  • Enchanted books!

  • Witches accompanied by bats – be careful!

  • Ghasts – be more careful!

  • And of course, this monstrosity…

That about sums up the changes made over the past year.  There have been some great updates to this mod, making it more diverse and interesting.  It was a good addition to any pack last year when it was still only a 1.6.4 mod, but now it is definitely something you cannot pass up if your world or server is compatible with it.

Moving forward, I think some more things I would like to see in this mod are:

  • Event tiers.  We know that higher/lower luck values give more and less chance for good or bad events, but it would be interesting to have certain events only happen at or beyond certain values.  For example, Lucky Block Temples could only spawn at +50 and above.

  • More events!  More items!  A mod like this can only benefit from extreme diversity in options – so go extreme!

  • More creative ideas – spawning structures was a *fantastic* idea, as was spawning mob groups (witch with bats? awesome) and the various easter eggs.  I particularly loved the wishing well.  More creativity like this would help the mod tremendously.

  • And finally, of course…  An update for compatibility with 1.7.10 / 1.8.

How to install Lucky Block for Minecraft 1.7.2 / 1.6.4

  1. Download and install Minecraft Forge mod loader

  2. Download the latest version of Lucky Block.

  3. Hold Windows key and press R to open the Run… dialog, or go to Start > Run.

  4. Enter %appdata% and navigate to your .minecraft/mods folder.

  5. Drag and drop the .zip file downloaded in step 2 into this folder.

Lucky Block is still very much in active development.  While it updates at a slower pace than some of the top-tier mods, it is definitely not a dead mod by any means.  What new features would you love to see in future updates?  Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
